The background color approximates the performance of the players.
The unit is the number of wins or losses against a player of the same strength. Winning against a player with a much higher strength doubles the win, winning against a player yields almost nothing. The same applies to losses.
On the first glance the worst thing that could happen in a six-round tournament is losing 12 units. Therefore you must lose all six games against low-rated players. But unluckily, as to be seen in the example, it can even be worse. This happens, if related players (See section 2.4 Let the Scores Flow!.) perform bad as well. Erik van den Berg and Dieter Krapp both lost an equivalent of 14 units in the example.
